I'm going to give you advice against your specific request, but only because I've seen what "the cheapest insurance" will do to your stepson and anyone involved in an accident he may get into.

I'm going to recommend you either place him on the same insurance you are on, because you will get a multicar or multi-driver discount, and because you ideally have a good history with your insurer so they will treat your stepson a bit better.

The cheapo companies will drop him the instant a bug hits the windshield and will guarantee a protracted legal battle if he gets into an accident if he ever wants to see his money or his car again.

I've been with State Farm for 13 years, and I've been through several accidents on both sides of the bender. They're pricier, but they've always treated me very well. The right company makes all the difference…..

    Good luck.

PS.. He may get additional discounts on insurance with any carrier if he takes a driver's ed class, and if he gets good grades in school.

You can't. No one will give you a "general estimate". Well, maybe your parents' insurance agent. But there are WAY too many variables involved, and all the online sites will require a drivers license number before giving you a quote.

But you'll have to make up a car (year, make, model) and coverages, as well, in order to get even a guess from your parents' agent.

  9. valeria

Lots of people do, but when it comes time to actually buy the policy, the quote usually changes.

They ask for personal information, because in order to do a halfway accurate quote, they need to run a DMV check and a credit check.

Go to a real, live, local independent agent, who can quote you with ten companies at the same time. If you still want online, you can compare various car insurances at this site.

This is a double edged sword. Online is definitely cheaper, but the companies that you can get online are "nonstandard" companies which mean that while you get a cheaper initial rate, they are going to surcharge the heck out of you if you get even one violation. Like progressive and Geico lure you in with low initial rates. It can get costly really fast with them. I think your best bet for getting a good coverage at a decent rate would be to check out an independent agent ( those are agents that write for different companies and not just one exclusively)

PS> the agents don't add fees to the policy. Whatever your premium is, the company gives the agent a percentage of that premium. So there are no added fees to the insured from the agency.

Try this site to before you buy car insurance

Here you can get quotes from different car insurance companies in your area, its the best way to find an affordable car insurance with a reliable company.

  12. Leela

Nope. That claim is going to show up everywhere you go. Best you can do, is offer to not put "comprehensive" coverage on your car, or do it with a $1,000 deductible.

My bank (Citibank) allows me to pay just about any company and any individual via my on line banking system. Depending on your insurance company you may be able to do it on their website, although it usually takes a few (business) days to process either via your own bank account or directly on their website.
In most cases, for a quicker credit, you can also call the insurance company and pay over the phone using a bank ATM/debit card, but be aware that by paying over the phone you may have to pay extra processing charges (usually only a couple of dollars). You can also contact the insurance agency to let them know you have made payment on line and it should process in a day or so…they will usually be able to make a note on your account although you may be without insurance for the day(s) between when you made payment and when the payment is processed.

While you're right to be concerned the fact is that Progressive is a huge company, hardly a fly-by-night operation. If they were to misuse the information you could sue the snot out of them.

If you were to call them the same information would be requested. If you were to go into an Progressive office, the same information would be requested.

As long as you're sure you're really at the real Progressive website, you'll be fine.

  15. Damac

When you're talking about insurance, best + cheapest and best + online don't go together. You want the best coverage you can afford, not the cheapest you can find. You'll know the difference when you get in an accident and need the coverage you've been paying for.

  16. liz g

Honestly, if you don't know what you need & you buy online, you could be getting inadequate coverages. You need to buy liability (NEVER purchase the minimum, EVER), uninsured/underinsured for the same limits as your liability, medical payments (highest available) and/or PIP – some states have both, comprehensive & collision (towing & rental are optional). Make sure you list the loan company as loss payee on the policy.
You can get quotes online but before you buy, call a couple of local independent agents because they can advise you on the coverages you really should have. Go back & quote THOSE coverages online & see if you really save any money, you may be surprised & having an agent is cheaper.
A coworker of my husband just had a broken windshield. He had to call some call center out west, called back & got someone else. He was sent to a glass shop out of state. There are at least 2 glass shops in his own town that his company (a "1-800" company) wouldn't send him to. If he got his insurance with an agent, he could have gone to a local glass shop and saved the time, gas & aggravation & could have talked to someone in person who knows him by name.
But, it is up to you what you want to do.
Remember, you will get what you pay for.

There are reputable insurance companies that will be cheaper to join via the web because it involves no work on their part.
You do your own joining. You could walk into a State farm office and it'll be one price or you could join State farm via a comparison site such as
http://4ym8.com/CompareInsurance.html and it'll be cheaper as they'll have no human to pay to get your business.
However on the internet it's just as easy to join an insurance company that simply doesn't exist and when you realize of the rip off, you blame the net.
Well, don't blame the net, make sure you get insurance from a reputable company, one that you know has been coming through for years, be it from their office or from the net, as metioned, check with your state's insurance department to see if they are licensed to do business then go for the cheapest. period.

  18. Eric S

Make sure you're comparing apples to apples, IE, the same coverage for each quote. That could be part of it. If you are, there is a difference between companies, which is the reason you are getting quotes in the first place. If they all charged the same there would be no reason to shop around, would there?

If I might suggest, find a local independent agent that is not tied to any particular company and have them find what is best for you in your situation.

  19. White Trash Beautiful

Well, there are lots of companies online that you could get a free car insurance quote rate. You just fill-up the form and then compare it among the others. There are certain factors in getting your cheap car insurance. Depends on the car, state, age, driving record, etc.

Good luck on your search… Drive safe… :)

  20. lynnlaw2

all you have to do is have your son add you to his policy….he has to to do this because he is the policy holder….and you having the same address has nothing to do with being on his insurance….i did the same thing with my daughter her car was in my name and i added her as a driver simple as that!

No,there is convenience of being able to view your coverage, policy, order i.d. cards, file claims, and make changes to your policy 24 hours a day. The only downside I have seen is due to the actual consumer NOT paying attention to the e-mails that require one to review/sign and return the documents to finalize the binding of the policy.

Any online insurance carrier however, when in doubt of their stability or credibility, should check them out through the Department of Insurance prior to purchasing anything though.

  23. heart_and_troll

First of all, this is going to vary by state.

MOST policies have rewritten COLLISION coverage to EXCLUDE dimunition of value. I'm not saying there's not a policy out there that still has it, I'm just saying, if there is, I don't know about it.

On the other hand, the PROPERTY DAMAGE part of your policy – if the accident is YOUR fault, and you damaged someone elses car, well, that WILL cover dimunition of value, in MOST STATES.

So you can't get first party dimunition of value, but you can get third party dimunition of value. Collision is a first party coverage only – so I'm siding with your agent. You could only collect it under someone ELSE'S policy, if they were at fault for the accident. Not your own.

Insurance companies target market certain groups of people and give them their best rates. Groupings are based on prior insurance coverage, age, gender, credit rating, driving record, marriage status and even occupation. Try this site to find the best car insurance quote

    It depends on the carrier.

  26. poisonrock14

You can get a QUOTE at ANY age…..however, a QUOTE is ONLY a quote.

In order to buy an insurance policy, you will have to be at LEAST 18 to have the policy in your name. You have to be at least 18 to sign a contract and an insurance policy IS a contract.

Until you are 18, you will probably have to be on your parent(s)' insurance policy.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

  27. **KIWI**

it's up to them how long it takes to process; especially if you're a new driver.

What is most likely the case is they need to review everything with a tenured underwriter (this always adds processing time because companies, especially the on line/call center type, employ a lot of newly certified underwriters and hire few experienced underwriters. This cuts down on the cost) before they can bind on the insurance.

To answer your question, it's not "normal" because your situation isn't normal, most people getting insurance have gone through it before. But it's not out of the ordinary.

But to find a cheap price you should get several quotes, do some legwork till something really cheap will come along.

If you buy an oldish Corolla, they are cheap to insure and fair on gas, get liability only and that's the cheapest type of cover you may get.
But get several quotes, try them all, they are free so find the cheapest one, it's out there.

  31. A W

Try Admiral. They are quite cheap. Also, Tesco are quite cheap. My first one was 500 quid, although that was when i was 25, so your age probably is whats putting the price up.

Well, the problem is, you can't sign an application over the phone.

Your best bet is http://www.progressive.com, but you are going to have to list the address where the car is kept at night . . . so if you're going to be "not home" for the next month or so, you're going to have a problem.

  34. Sonador

Be careful because sometimes these low rates don't last long. Typically, they raise them considerably after you sign up

Let me start with the more information you give an insurance company the more accurate the quote will be for you. If you give them have the info your price will like change. Many companies will sell you a price a not coverage. I would recommend talking with a broker they will quote you with many companies and find out which one is best for you. Good Luck.

    There is no best place.
Insurance companies target market certain groups of people and give them their best rates. Groupings are based on prior insurance coverage, age, gender, credit rating, driving record, marriage status and even occupation. Your best source would be your local independent insurance agent. He/she knows who writes which group at what price.
Also, your agent can advise you on how to obtain the best quotes not just now, but also in six months. You may need some grooming.

I go through Geico. They have decent rates and you can always change it later if you find a better deal.

  44. majarlika2007

Depends on a number of things for e.g some companies reward drivers with a cheaper quote if you are claim free for 4 years, others if your'e over 50 basically if they think theres less chance of you claiming its cheaper, whilst if you are a teenager driving a sports car you will pay a small fortune so it depends on different factors I suggest you try an internet comparison site to get a guide of whats good for you, once you find a good deal remember to check it every year as insurersseem to expect most people to just renew rather than searching again.

There isn't ONE BEST website online for car insurance. There are quite a few of them.

Recently when I was looking for car insurance I found this site:

    http://www.1carinsurance.org

They told me which providers were offering insurance in my state. It was great.

    I also tried:

    http://www.progressive.com
    http://www.geico.com

but I got the cheapest insurance from the first site.

  46. CAD Z

there aren't really any. the one that claims to give you there and 3 others only gives you theirs as the lowest. esurance is pretty low if you have no tickets and are over 25

Also, a good resource is this one…

Just go to Google and type "car insurance Indiana". There's sure to be lots of options.
It's very hard to recommend a car insurance company for each individual. It all depends on your needs basically and also your budget.
There are many factors to take into consideration when purchasing car insurance.
However, I came across a site that might be pretty useful. You might want to check it out : http://purchase-car-insurance-online.blogspot.com

Good luck and the final decision all depends on you.

  49. HellBoy65

yes, there is no problem in submitting personal info since the so called personal info is just basic info that is used to get a generic insurance quote.

that cannot be used for identity stealing.

  50. Bo Did

My son purchased his insurance on-line through an insurance broker. He was placed with an excellent carrier, great service, friendly, knowledgeable people, Very reasonable premium.

Before you go with Geico, do a little more shopping around. You can easily beat their rates at other companies. Try "www.esurance.com" and "insweb.com" for starters.
